Hot Days and Nights

By Dr. Hawkins

Summer has reached us in Indianapolis, and boy is it a hot one!  Our pets don't have the ability to sweat to cool down like we do.  With temperatures yesterday rising over 100 degrees, and forecasted to do the same today, here are some tips to keep your pets cool and healthy!

   1)  When your pets are outside, make sure they have free access to cool, fresh water.

   2)  For outside pets, ensure there is plenty of shade to allow escape from the hot sun.

   3)  Consider providing a plastic children's pool full of water outside to play in.

   4) Check on your pets frequently to ensure they are acting normal.  Take your pet indoors  to air conditioning for a nice break from the heat.  If AC is not available, turn on some floor fans for your pet.

   5)  If your pet collapses, begins panting heavily, develops dark brick red gums, or has a very fast heart rate, seek emergency veterinary care immediately.

   6) NEVER leave your pet alone in a car, even with a window down.  This can be deadly in just minutes.
